Eastland-Fairfield Career & Technical Schools has hired Dr. Kimberly Pietsch Miller as its next superintendent. The Board of Education approved Dr. Miller’s hiring during a September 30, 2020, special meeting. She will replace superintendent Bonnie Hopkins, who announced her retirement in April after leading the district for more than 11 years.
“I am honored to have been selected to lead Eastland-Fairfield Career & Technical Schools in the coming years,” offered Dr. Miller, who currently is the superintendent of Bexley City Schools, a role she began in 2017. Bexley is one of 16 school districts Eastland-Fairfield serves by providing career-technical education.
During her three years at Bexley, Dr. Miller led efforts to develop and implement a strategic plan and aligned instruction around key goals. She helped reorganize the district’s structure to be more flexible and responsive, implemented instructional coaches, passed a levy, significantly improved access to and implementation of instructional technology, and opened the important conversations of mental health and racial inequities.
Dr. Miller has spent her career in public education. Prior to becoming the superintendent of Bexley City Schools, she served as the chief academic officer at Dublin City Schools for three years. There she worked collaboratively with staff to develop clear and common instructional goals that created a strong sense of alignment and focus across the district’s 20 schools. Dr. Miller also served in leadership roles at Loveland City Schools as the assistant superintendent for teaching and learning, Indian Hill Exempted Village Schools as middle school principal, and Lakota Local Schools as an elementary assistant principal. She spent more than a decade as an English/language arts teacher, starting her education career in Cincinnati Public Schools.
“The Board of Education is excited to welcome Dr. Miller as our next superintendent, and we look forward to working with her to continue the strong reputation the district has built in career-technical education and adult workforce development under the leadership of Superintendent Bonnie Hopkins,” said Eastland-Fairfield Career & Technical Schools Board President Bill McGowan, who represents Teays Valley Local Schools. “Dr. Miller stood out as a candidate during the search process and the Board is excited about her leading Eastland-Fairfield into this next chapter when we say goodbye to our longtime superintendent, Bonnie Hopkins, who has been a great superintendent to work with these past 11 years as someone who has always put the school and the students first in all of her decisions.”
Dr. Miller earned her bachelor's degree in English from The Ohio State University, a master's degree in education from the University of Cincinnati and her superintendent's license from Xavier University. She completed her doctorate in educational leadership from Miami University.
“I am thankful to have time to transition to the role with the assistance of Superintendent Bonnie Hopkins,” said Dr. Miller. “I respect the accomplishments that she has achieved and look forward to working with her over the next few months.”
Dr. Miller is expected to begin as a consultant/administrator on special assignment with the district effective October 7, 2020, and will work closely with Hopkins on the transition through December. Hopkins, whose contract ended on July 31, 2020, had a new contract approved during the April 15, 2020, Board meeting that extended her tenure from August 1, 2020, through December 31, 2020. Her retirement will be effective January 1, 2021. At that time, Dr. Miller will begin her contract as superintendent effective January 1, 2021. Her contract runs through July 31, 2023.
